J de Francisco - Jan 2009
2009

This past year I was involved in projects and initiatives tackling some of the hottest areas in today’s telecommunications industry such as: cloud computing, content delivery systems, mobile broadband and applications.

2009 turned out to be pretty exciting and intensive, the year ended with the submission of four new patents in collaboration with Dave Benco, “Mr. Innovateur”, under filing consideration by Alcatel-Lucent’s Intellectual Property team at the time of posting this.

I would like to take this chance to publicly thank my team: J. Amoss, S. Sankar, K. Saunders, M. Snyder, H. Wang and my boss, B. Goers for their support, as well as everyone I have had the pleasure to work with throughout the year.

Social Networking Talk

I started the year by releasing some of the slides I had been using in 2008. This presentation focus on social media and emerging trends driving new communication and networking paradigms.

A year later, this file has registered more than 1,300 views on slideshare and continues to be the source of interesting discussions.

I made it my job to get out there and share what I believe makes the telecommunications industry a vibrant marketplace. I would like to recommend three interesting events, which I blogged about:

Mobile Operator Smart Pipes and Applications
eComm 09 Cloud Slam 09
july

In July I went back to Europe to deliver the keynote address at a Web 2.0 conference hosted in Madrid’s Palacio de Congresos.

This was a private executive event, organized by Alcatel-Lucent and, therefore, there is nothing else I can actually disclose here beyond my thanks go to R. Atienzar for his invaluable assistance.

In this trip I also conducted a half a day workshop on “Emerging Concepts, Trends and Technologies” at ALU’s local office.

Unfortunately, I had to decline an invitation to participate at WIMS 2.0 due to scheduling conflicts. WIMS is an initiative led by Telefonica.

Harvard
Harvard Leading Product Innovation

On my way back to the U.S. I went to Boston to join Harvard’s LPI program as a student of product innovation.

I enjoyed every minute I was there, especially Clayton Christensen and Stefan H. Thomke’s excellent teaching, the authors of “Innovator’s Dilemma” and “Experimentation Matters” respectively.

The picture on the left shows me in the middle, right under the orange arrow. You can see the entire class picture by clicking on it.

My new team became fully operational and hit the ground running in september.

We support proof of concept projects and demonstrations introducing a variety of emerging and next generation technologies that showcase Alcatel-Lucent’s innovations.

This is a diverse, agile and dependable team with strong project management skills and a clear sense of value creation, which I am really proud to support.

Frost & Sullivan
Frost & Sullivan eBulletin

I was engaged in Frost & Sullivan’s Executive MindXchanges in Chicago as a Thought Leader in the area of social media for the enterprise.

Frost & Sullivan captured my “thoughts” in a full page of the Sales and Marketing eBulletin released in December

My gratitude goes to Frost’s Erin Lindholm, eBulletin Editor, and Ian Lyckland who was patient and persistent enough to make my going to MindXchange’s Marketing World happen.

ALU Boot Camp Tag
Boot Camp Team

Two of the innovation projects I was involved in made it to the Entrepreneurial Boot Camp’s semifinals. This link provides some insights on Innovation Tournaments

One of those projects was selected to go through the Boot Camp program. Our team was formed by: Jose Luis del Cerro, Dave Benco, Jitender Singh (project leader), myself and, last but not least, Ajay Pande who is not featured in the above picture.

The Boot Camp’s classes were delivered Clifford Schorer and Low Murray of Columbia Business School. They are experienced entrepreneurs and leading authorities in new business ventures. I would also like to take this chance acknowledge all of the help that Alcatel-Lucent’s Jim Galiano, Global Operations Director, and his team provided.

Cloud Computing and LTE

I have released a few of the slides I have been using to brainstorm and discuss cloud computing in the context of mobile broadband.

These few charts become part of a crowdsourcing exercise for the purpose of gathering insights from anyone on the web.

So, please let me know your comments. My email address is shown on the slides.

2009

The meltdown of global financial and housing markets was strongly felt in most economic sectors, including high-tech. 2009 was a challenging year for most.

I keep reminding myself that the worst of times can be the best of times for innovators and entrepreneurs. In some of my presentations I discuss significant paradigm shifts currently at work, which are triggering far reaching chain reactions.

I’m fortunate enough to be working on projects that leverage game changing opportunities and with people whose professionalism and passion is second to none.
